Some remarkable research has shown that significantly better maths scores are achieved by those children who take part in fun Friday afternoon games & puzzles sessions. It also showed that children’s confidence grows and they’re more likely to ‘have a go’, a prime example of a Growth Mindset activity in operation!

All teaching staff get so much out of observing their children enjoying these weekly activities as well as seeing the long-term benefits the games can bring. Ideas and suggestions on how to organise weekly PuzzleFriday sessions in your class can be found further down this page.
The PuzzleFriday packs
In order to see improvements in number skills and social skills within your school, you may wish to purchase at least one of the packs mentioned below. Each pack contains sufficient resources to kit a class of up to 30 children for the whole academic year.

You can always add extra games at a later date by purchasing individual copies of the ones already in the pack, and could even add a few of your own that may be collecting dust in your cupboards at home or in school!

Perfect for lower juniors as an introduction to a wide range of games involving number activities plus some visual, logic, spatial and puzzle work. These materials are also ideal for KS1 children when supported by teaching staff, parents or older children:

How to organise your own PuzzleFriday sessions
During my workshops, and throughout the various age groups, I always aim to get students playing the games in mixed ability groups so all students can play the same games together, thus learning different skills from one another and undergoing the same experiences. I also encourage teachers to implement this when possible.
I’m confident in saying that when regularly playing all the games from both packs, you will quickly see a noticeable improvement in the children’s problem-solving and reasoning as well as the development of their confidence in understanding and handling number, not forgetting spatial-awareness techniques and general social skills.
A typical example is shown by using Pack A. Firstly group the children onto six tables with 4 or 5 children on each table in mixed ability. Initially, the six tables may contain:
- Table 1: Whot!; Table 2: Rush Hour Junior;
- Table 3: Hexago Continuo; Table 4: Hexago Continuo;
- Table 5: Shut the Box; Table 6: FlagSnap.
You will notice that there are still a number of games left over for future weeks, therefore ensuring weekly sessions are kept fresh by the children playing a variety of games.
The games will be played by the groups of children for the first 10-15 minutes, and the games will remain on those tables while the children move around to the next table.
Those children on Tables 1 & 2 will move onto Tables 3 & 4, those from 3 & 4 will move to 5 & 6 while those on 5 & 6 move to 1 & 2 in a carousel-type movement. This will happen again in about 15 minutes’ time so after about 45 minutes, the children will have played three different types of games.
It may be an idea to keep a note of which games each child plays each week so they get to play different games over a period of time.
The very first time PuzzleFriday takes place you may only have time for two games in a 45-minute period. The games will be new to the children and they will need to become familiar with the various rules & instructions as well as the PuzzleFriday system in the classroom.
After a few weeks, you could even go for the following system during your session:
- Tables 1 & 2: Whot!;
- Tables 3 & 4: Shut the Box;
- Tables 5 & 6: the junior possible game.
As you can see, only three different games are focused on within the whole class, but maybe just play these games without rotation for about 10-15 minutes and this could then be followed by ALL six tables playing the 5puzzle game for the remainder of the session.
After getting used to this team game, a weekly 5puzzle team competition may be popular!
PuzzleFriday in operation
After delivering my maths workshops to schools, many are extremely keen to set up a PuzzleFriday scheme for their pupils after seeing the excitement generated. It’s also great to see so many teaching staff feeling enthusiastic towards implementing a new scheme on a Friday afternoon after watching the children react to my activities.
Schools from all over the UK are following suit and quickly seeing improvements in children’s skills, confidence and enjoyment towards maths. There are also discussions on-going for PuzzleFridayUSA to be rolled out in Southern California using these games.
